Save the Date – Workshop on Universe Awareness: Legacy & Prospects

We are delighted to announce an upcoming virtual workshop:

Global Citizenship in Astronomy Education:
Universe Awareness for the Next Decade

21 October 2025 | 14:00 – 17:00 CEST | Online

The workshop will reflect on the legacy of Universe Awareness (UNAWE)—an international programme that, since its founding, has introduced astronomy to young children, especially
those from underprivileged backgrounds, to inspire curiosity, critical thinking, and a sense
of global citizenship. UNAWE was implemented in more than 60 countries and became one
of the IAU’s most impactful education programmes.

With this event, we aim to look back at the programme, explore the prospects and needs for relaunching UNAWE, and discuss the future role of astronomy in global science education
for young children.

The programme will include contributions from experts in astronomy education and child development, representatives of IAU Offices, Commissions, and Divisions, as well as case
studies of successful UNAWE pilots worldwide.

Dr. Cecilia Scorza (LMU Munich) and Dr. Edward Gomez (IAU Division C President & LCO
Education Director) will join as the keynote speakers to share their perspective on the past
and future of UNAWE.

We warmly invite you to save the date and join us for this important conversation.
